MarineMax Nisswa Technician Dan Derfler Named ABYC 2026 Outstanding Technician

Derfler's selection reflects a career unlike any other in the industry. What began as a summer job repairing outboard motors at age 16 has grown into a 51-year tenure at the same Nisswa location, a career defined by craftsmanship, loyalty, and a genuine passion for the work. Over five decades, he has earned certifications from OMC, Volvo, MerCruiser, PCM, Indmar, and Ilmor, developing the ability to work on virtually any inboard engine.

"His work ethic and his loyalty to the marine business and the customer base is outstanding," said Brent Wiczek, General Manager of MarineMax Nisswa. "Dan truly loves what he does."

A lifelong resident of the Brainerd Lakes Area, Derfler's ties to the community run deep; he works on the same land today where his father once worked. Despite the option to retire, he continues to come in four days a week, driven by purpose and the relationships he's built over a lifetime in the industry.

"Dan Derfler is exactly the kind of person this award exists to recognize: a craftsman, a community pillar, and a living example of what a career built on integrity and passion looks like," according to one nomination.
