How to be an Environmentally Conscious Boater

Did you know that April is officially Earth Month®? Established in 1970 by a high school student, this timeframe was initiated to help bring awareness to various aspects of the environment and to those in need on a global scale. It’s also a month widely known for cleaning up the earth. To take part in this great cause, MarineMax is sharing tips to help motivate boaters to become more environmentally conscious while on the water.

    1. Anchor Awareness

Anchoring in certain areas of oceans, lakes, or other bodies of water can harm aquatic life if not done properly or with care. Try not to attach or drag your anchor across coral reefs, shellfish areas, or seagrass beds. Refer to an underwater chart or drop your line in the sand or mud for the safest bet. Also, be careful boating in shallow water since a boat bottom or motor can damage a reef as well.

    2. Being Conscious of Marine Wildlife

It’s a magnificent sight spotting a dolphin, whale, or other marine animals, but it’s always best to keep a safe distance from your subject. Stay at least 300 feet away from all marine life and even farther away from critically endangered species. Also, don’t feed marine animals or other wildlife around the area unsuitable food since it can endanger their health or change their behavior. Lastly, if you see an injured or entangled sea creature, call the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 or try the NOAA Marine Entanglement Hotline at 1-800-900-3622.

    3. Pumping Out Properly

Blackwater or sewage discharge can have a negative effect on a marine environment or aquatic life if not disposed of properly. Human waste feeds algae blooms and ultimately kills shellfish and other aquatic species. Sewage and chemicals to control it are also hazardous to swimmers and people who eat shellfish. To avoid all the negative effects, MarineMax has many marinas that offer pumpout—and ones awarded with a prestigious “Clean Marina” status. Take a look and find out which one is closest to you.

    4. Reuse and Repurpose

Have an old life preserver that doesn’t fit or some old rope that is looking frayed? Then why not donate or repurpose it? There are companies online that take used items from boats and some that will even turn old wetsuits into yoga mats! Another good practice to follow is to lessen the use of disposable drink cups, dinnerware, and bottles. There are plenty of great reusable water bottles and dinnerware available that won’t add to the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” if accidentally dropped overboard. This Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius comes with a sizable sink to wash reusable dinnerware on.

    5. Eco-Friendly Products in the Water

Residue from certain products can have an unfavorable impact on the water. When cleaning the outside of your boat, try to use only non-toxic chemicals so that fish and other aquatic animals do not get harmed. There are “green” boat soaps available and certain household products like baking soda and vinegar that can aid in cleaning without having too much of a negative effect. Also, be careful when using certain sunscreens, since they can contain additives such as oxybenzone, which can damage coral and fish.

    6. Reduce Your Environmental Impact

There are various ways to be eco-friendly while still enjoying your time on the water. Feel better about how you propel your boat by servicing your engine and boat regularly. This helps ensure that no leaks are in the lines or unnecessary fuel is used. Investing in fully-electric models, such as the Super Air Nautique, or eco-friendly boats like the all-new Boston Whaler 360 Outrage, are also good options. A boater can also reduce their carbon footprint by using an electric motor, which Mercury Marine plans on launching more in 2023.
