Basic Boating FAQs

The answer to this question varies widely from one boat buyer to the next. Answering some other questions first will help you narrow down what's best for you. Questions to ask yourself include:

  • How many people will I be boating with? The boat you buy must have the capacity so that you won't have to leave anyone at home.
  • Is there a specific boating activity that I want to use my boat for? Perhaps you're an avid angler or a thrill-seeker who loves watersports. While many boats can serve multiple purposes, it's a good idea to choose a boat designed for what you love doing most.
  • Will I need to sleep aboard my boat? Not everyone feels comfortable spending nights aboard a boat, and sacrificing a cabin means more room for other uses. A cabin can be beneficial for shelter from the sun, wind, or rain, even you don't intend to sleep aboard.
  • Will I be trailering the boat? The answer to this question may result in some limitations for the size of your boat. Things to consider include the trailering capacity of your car/truck, whether the boat will need to fit in a garage, and the length and height of the boat when on the trailer.

There are pros and cons to both new and pre-owned boats. New boats are more expensive but come with the assurance of the manufacturer's reputation and warranty. In general, lenders allow buyers to finance new boats for a lower rate and/or with a lower down payment. And of course, there's no feeling quite like knowing you own the newest model with the latest features and most modern systems.

The biggest benefit of buying a used or brokerage boat is the lower price. Some manufacturers offer remnant warranties, so you can still have the peace of mind. Many used boats come refitted with up-to-date motors and systems, and generally depreciate less than new boats.

Depending on the boat, you can find prices from under $10,000 to millions of dollars. According to NMMA, the average price of a new powerboat is around $40,000. Boating is a commitment in both time and money, but you'll be hard-pressed to find another recreational activity that offers the benefits that boating does. Boat owners can enjoy fishing, watersports, cruising, and making memories on the water that land-based activities cannot compete with.

Lots of boat owners store their boat on their property, typically on a trailer. Additionally you can keep your boat at a marina, high and dry or boatyard. Marinas and high and dry storage locations provide the added benefit of being able to enjoy your boat without trailering to a ramp. They are also good options for boats beyond your vehicle’s towing capacity. Some MarineMax locations offer boat storage and marinas. Find out which here.

The possibilities are endless! Most people tend to think of the most common activities when it comes to boating, whether it be fishing, wakeboarding, tubing, or cruising. In addition to these, boaters can bring aboard some food and drinks to spend a day exploring the coastline and enjoying the scenery. Ask any boater and they'll probably tell you that the best way to view fireworks or concerts is aboard a boat. Take the family out to a new restaurant on the water and dock or anchor your boat nearby. Get to know other boaters at "raft-ups", where a group of boating enthusiasts gather beside one another and socialize.
