Boating Tips: Finding Calm Waters

Welcome to Boating Tips with MarineMax! Just because it may be a bit breezey out doesn’t mean that your boating day is necessarily cancelled. Captains Keith and Nick have the details. Ask your questions, make comments, and learn a thing or two about your favorite outdoor activity.

Finding calm waters is essential to a day on the water when the wind picks up.

Leeward Islands

A leeward side is also know as the “sheltered” or “calm side” of an island or beach. Just because your boating forecast has a little bit of wind doesn’t mean that you still can’t get out on the water! Finding these sheltered, calm areas mean that you can still enjoy time on the water as you won’t be buffeted by wind and waves there!

A Caveat

Just because finding a leeward island or other such area can provide shelter from the wind, doesn’t mean that you should take risks. Be sure to pay attention for forecasts and weather warnings. There are a number of
that can provide information on conditions. We don’t recommend boating in a small craft advisory or other similar conditions. Here at MarineMax, we offer a number of safe boating classes to help you learn how to stay safe on the water. We’ll see you out there.
