Financing Your Boat With MarineMax: A Conversation with Tyler Layton, President of Financial Services

Buying a boat is a big decision, and how you finance it matters. We sat down with Tyler Layton, President of Financial Services at MarineMax, to talk about how our team helps customers find the right loan, what to expect from the process, and how to set yourself up for success.

What sets MarineMax financing apart from other lenders or traditional banks?

I'd say it's our combination of marine lending expertise and personal service. We work with marine lenders and understand the nuances of financing boats, from loan structures and longer terms to documentation, insurance, and titling. Instead of asking our customers to contact multiple banks and navigate the process on their own, our team manages the details and presents competitive options suited to each customer and transaction. Just as important, financing is part of a broader relationship with MarineMax that continues well beyond the boat purchase.

How does your team help customers choose the right financing plan?

We start by listening. We want to hear how you plan to use your boat, how long you expect to keep it, and what feels comfortable for your budget. From there, we tailor the service to your needs and talk you through everything, including how the rate, term, and down payment work together. Our goal isn't just to get you approved. We want to find a plan that feels good for you and fits the boating lifestyle you're dreaming about.

Are there exclusive incentives or special rates available when financing through MarineMax?

Sometimes, yes. At various times, MarineMax customers may have access to lender programs available through our nationwide lending partnerships. Availability can change by brand, model, and timing, so the best move is to talk with one of our sales professionals for the most up-to-date information. Even when a promotional rate isn't available, our relationships with marine lenders help us find you a competitive option. All financing is subject to lender approval, of course, though.

How straightforward is the application and approval process, and how long does it take?

We've designed it to be simple, and you'll work directly with one of our business managers from start to finish. Most well-documented applications get a credit decision within 24 hours, and often it's much faster, sometimes within a few hours.

Timing depends on a couple of things: the amount you're financing, and how your finances are structured. A larger loan takes a closer look. So can a smaller one if, for example, the boat is owned through an LLC or a trust.

What are some common misconceptions about boat financing?

The first is that marine financing works like an auto loan. It doesn't. Marine loans can offer longer terms, and lenders look at the bigger picture, including the boat, the loan amount, how you'll use it, and your overall credit profile.

The second is that you need perfect credit or a lot of cash upfront to get started. There are financing options for a wide range of qualified buyers and budgets.

What advice do you have for first-time boat buyers considering financing?

  • Think beyond the sticker price. Plan for the full cost of ownership, including insurance, fuel, storage, maintenance, registration, and the gear you'll need to get out on the water.
  • Get pre-qualified before you buy. You can do this right through MarineMax. It isn't a formal lender underwriting decision, but it gives you a clear picture of your buying power before you start shopping.
  • Hold off on big new credit commitments. If you're seriously considering a boat, it's best not to take on other major financial obligations at the same time.
  • Ask us anything. Our business managers will walk you through the rate, term, amount financed, and payment so you feel confident about your decision.

What happens if I want to refinance, upgrade, or sell my boat later?

We're here for the long haul. Whether you're buying, selling, or trading, MarineMax connects the pieces and makes your next move easy. We can review your current loan to see if refinancing might help (subject to lender approval), and when you're ready for your next boat, we can help with the valuation, payoff details, financing, and paperwork.

How can I get the best possible loan terms?

  • Check your credit early and correct any errors.
  • Pay your obligations on time. A strong credit profile, manageable debt, stable income, and an appropriate down payment all help.
  • Gather your financial documents ahead of time so the process moves quickly.
  • Avoid opening new credit before a big marine purchase.

What are you most proud of about your team?

I'm proud of how seriously our team takes the trust our customers put in us. Buying a boat is a big financial decision, and it's also an exciting, emotional milestone. Our business managers see both sides of that experience. They work to solve issues before they become obstacles, and they explain everything clearly.

We don't measure success by closing another deal. We measure it by customer satisfaction: whether you feel informed, respected, and excited to be part of the MarineMax family.

How is MarineMax making the financing experience more digital?

We're working to connect the financing process with the whole boat-buying journey, so it feels seamless from researching a boat to estimating payments to signing on the dotted line. Digital applications, online payment estimates, electronic delivery, and digital signatures are all supported, along with remote transactions, so you have more flexibility. Technology handles the convenience, and our team is still here for the personal guidance. That is our goal to work towards in the future.

Anything else you want customers to know?

"We may be a little biased, but we think we're the best in the business at financing boats." — Tyler Layton, President of Financial Services, MarineMax
